Paralegal I Position at the Midwestern Innocence Project

The Midwestern Innocence Project investigates and litigates claims of actual innocence on state or federal cases.  Cases are accepted even if DNA evidence is unavailable or will only partially assist in establishing actual innocence.  For the vast majority of MIP’s cases, DNA evidence is not available.  In those instances, actual innocence is proven via extensive records collection, witness interviews, and expert analysis and testimony.  

Paralegal I will manage the records collection aspects for cases currently being investigated and those awaiting investigation.  Responsibilities will include liaison activities with various state and federal agencies in order to ensure that open records laws are being applied relative to MIP’s cases, and subsequent information flow throughout the organization; review and prioritize cases based on faulty scientific evidence used during the trial, which led to a wrongful conviction; and coordinate with the Legal Director and experts to better investigate and litigate these cases.

Daily Responsibilities include

·         Maintain server files

·         Request and obtain necessary records on incoming cases

·         Prepare case files for students and staff

·         Monitor all records requests on active cases and all follow-up with various agencies.

·         Draft monthly reports regarding the current status of all case files both on the server and in hard copy. 

·         Conduct legal research on incoming cases

·         Investigate the collection of records and locating people related to active cases

     Successful Applicant Skills

·         Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university

·         Minimum of 5 years experience as a paralegal or investigator

·         Familiarity with state and federal court systems

·         Computer Skills including  Microsoft Office WordPerfect, & Casemap

·         Bilingual Skills Preferred

Paralegal II will directly assist the Staff Attorney and Legal Secretary in managing essential, case-relevant incoming and outgoing information.  Responsibilities will include and focus on the various elements of legal correspondence and incoming case assessments; client liaison activities; and the ongoing update and management of electronic case files and relevant materials.  This position will also coordinate the volunteers’ work on cases.  Applicants must submit a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and references to Tiffany Murphy, University of Missouri Kansas City School of Law, 5100 Rockhill Road; Kansas City, Missouri 64110-2499.  No telephone or email inquires will be accepted.  Applications accepted until February 5, 2010.
